Former Conductor Rick Pauzé (2008-2017)

The band gratefully thanks Rick for bringing the band to a new playing level after serving as Artistic Director for 9 years. Examples of his work with this band can be found under Past Concerts and Audio & Video

Rick originally joined the band as a trombonist, helping the organization for well over 10 years. We wish him all the best in his new endeavours, and know he will be no stranger in future years.

A music graduate of Humber College and McMaster University, Rick Pauzé has been playing trombone professionally since he was 15. Educated in arranging by Dave McMurdo, Mike Malone, Marta Hidy, and Jim Howard, he wrote music for musicals, jazz bands, and R&B groups. Being active with various bands, he enjoyed playing with such notables as Stewart Laughton (Canadian Brass), Al Kay (Boss Brass), Don Menza, Phil Nimmons, Peter Appleyard, Hagood Hardy, and the Temptations.

As a trombonist, Rick travelled to Florida, Montreal, and Germany, and is now active in the Barrie area which he calls home. He was a musical director of music theatre, and also founded his own music groups The Art of Jazz Big Band and The Hiptet. Currently he plays in various orchestras, jazz ensembles, and pit bands particularly in Toronto, Barrie, and Central Ontario.

In 2015-16, the Barrie Concert Band participated in artsVest sponsorship training modules with other local cultural groups. The group received instructional resources to promote sponsorship agreements that mutually benefit Sponsors and audience alike.

We are pleased to announce two new Sponsors, the National Bank of Canada and the New Classical 102.9 FM, starting with the promotion of our June 11, 2016 Gershwin concert. Thanks to them, we qualified for an equivalent grant courtesy of the artsVest program run by Business for the Arts and supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

The awards celebration for participating Barrie groups will be held on June 14, 2016. The Barrie Concert Band thanks everyone responsible for their generous support and looks forward to building on its long-term relationships within in the community.

Our great audience once again showed its ongoing support for local causes. The Barrie Food Bank and Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank was able to benefit from significant donations prior to Christmas.

The Veterans Salute concert at the ANAF on November 5, 2013 resulted in over 600 lbs. of food donated to the Barrie Food Bank.

The concert at the Lighthouse Community Church on December 8, 2013, resulted in over $3,000 raised for a total of $31,800 over the past 9 years for the Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank.

Many thanks to everyone for these significant contributions and making these consistent successful events!

We are pleased to acknowledge one our percussion players, Ray Reilly, who was awarded at Barrie's Rhythmfest festival on August 10, 2013, for recognition of his lifetime work as a percussionist. His notable achievements made his tenure with the Barrie Concert Band an exceptional honour.

Toronto-born Ray Reilly was a student of George L. Stone of Boston, and the late Billy Gladstone of New York. Ray had been a member of the orchestras of the National Ballet of Canada, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and the Charlottelown Festival. Mr. Reilly had been active in radio, TV, commercial music, film music, and with the CBC Symphony Orchestra. He played a full 25 seasons with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra earning tours of the UK, Europe, Australia, China, Japan, and South East Asia.

Ray was the author of Power, Speed and Flexibility, first published by BMI in 1968, with a second edition revision in 2007 published by Talking Stick Productions. He had an active teaching practice - his former students included Stan White, Valerie Hathaway, Mike Leone, and many more.

In his retirement, Ray performed with Ken Hyatt in the Mike Lewis Trio. He was an active volunteer in the Barrie Concert Band from 1998-2013, and encouraged and actively mentored younger percussionists in the community.  We gratefully acknowledge his legacy of his work with the band for 15 years.

Helping out local food banks

For the past couple of years we have been helping to raise resources and funds for two food banks. You can help out by attending one of two concerts this year.

Our first event is at the Army, Navy, and Air Force (ANAF) Club on Tuesday, November 5, representing the Barrie area, and the second event is at the Lighthouse Community Church in Wasaga Beach.

We hope you can attend one of these free events and make an equivalent contribution that would normally be charged. Thanks!
